I'm Ready....I'm Set...When do I GO?!?

Lets face it – the main reason you are heading to the UK is to travel; it just helps that you can also work in the field that you love! The UK terms are well-geared for travelling! The UK Academic year is slightly different to ours in that it has only 3 terms - they are quite long (can be up to 14 weeks long), however they do have 1 week off in the middle of each term and 2 weeks off in between terms. The UK school year is as follows:

Autumn Term (Sep – Dec) with 2 weeks off over Christmas
Spring Term (Jan – Easter) with 2 weeks off over Easter
Summer Term (April – July) with 6 weeks off over Summer!

Finding the right time in the academic year to travel is very important, as just like here in Australia there are busy times and quiet times. To avoid those frustrating times when you are waiting by the phone for work you should keep the following points in mind:

1) The busiest time of the year to teach is from November – May.
2) The quietest times of the year are September and the first half of October; and also June and July (both the start and end of the UK academic year)

If you are flexible in your travel plans we recommend that you try and arrive, at the earliest, the end of October. This will give you time to sleep off your jet lag, do a tour of your local area, get settled into more permanent accommodation and attend your induction in your local branch. From here we can get you out to schools and start your UK teaching career!

It also helps to be proactive in looking for work – if you are available for work make sure you ring your consultant and let them know! The best times are calling after 4:30pm and 7am. That way when work comes in you’ll be fresh on their mind!

If you are only looking for a long term job then it is worth keeping in mind that  Protocol Education host a number UK Principals in October/November each year who can interview with you face-to-face. They can offer long term roles which will start in January, so if you are looking for UK teaching jobs please click here to register with Protocol Education.
