Gareth's Blog: London Teaching: Classroom Fibs Part Two

The favourite uncle

A major issue with supply teaching or coming in to replace someone part way through a term is the inevitable comparisons made between the new teacher and the previous teacher.

Cries can be heard across the room of “Ms Jones lets us watch movies all lesson”; “Mr Heggarty doesn’t make us sit at our desks”; “Ms Ethlebert allows us to slaughter goats in the computer lab during lunchbreak, so you’ll have to let me leave class five minutes early”.

These unfounded claims can be quickly dismissed by stating: “Well do I look like Ms Ethlebert?”
Despite any number of anatomical and psychological differences, this will be met with a “Yes”.

So perhaps the teacher should choose wording more precisely by stating: “I’m not Ms Ethlebert. I’m here now, so we play by my rules.”

Of course the teacher must uphold the usual behaviour management policy of the school, but not feel they must live down to the supposedly low expectations of the teacher they are replacing – whether the claims are true or not.


Students continually thieve each other’s pencils, rubbers, rulers and in one instance a pet rock. The best tactic to pursue in this instance is to play King Solomon.

The teacher should declare they will divide the disputed item by two, rendering it unusable by either student. Under this threat one student will surely come forward begging that the Hello Kitty pencil be saved and given to the other student. Of course, this student who wants the Hello Kitty pencil saved is the true owner, for what child would want to see their precious cat-related stationery damaged in such a brutal manner.

Alternatively there is also no reason why a teacher can’t create their own temporary deceit by hiding any popular stationery for their own purposes. This will remove the said item from any confrontational situations, while also providing the teacher with a substantial supply of writing implements. These will eventually be returned once the heat has died down.

To Conclude

Until schools are equip with proper state-of-the-art secret service style interrogation methods, teachers must rely on their cunning and wit to outsmart students.
