London is waaaay more expensive than Sydney, right?!?

Worried about the cost of living in your move to the UK? Mitch from our Aussie team has a surprise for you....

Teachers always talk to me about ‘how can I afford to live in London?!?’ Some suburbs have astronomical rents, intercity transport can be a rip off ($50 to travel 50 minutes from London to Cambridge!) and horror stories of people living in a room under the stairs like Harry Potter! But did you know that, aside from rent, the actual cost of living in the UK is lower than Sydney?

Yep – living in London is more affordable than Sydney! Don’t believe me? Read the report at http://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/why-australias-still-the-worlds-most-expensive-place-to-live-20150416-1mm3lt.html

London is exactly the same as nearly every other capital city; the best areas are the most expensive, good areas are affordable and some tougher urban areas are quite cheap. Most Aussies tend to pay between £500-700 per month (including utility bills) for a double room in a nice area of London.  This is expensive, we know, but it is definitely affordable.

The best way to measure it is that you should budget one week of pay to cover one month of rent & utility bills.  If you're working 5 days a week in London you'll be earning - at minimum - £650 a week before tax.

Outside of rent you’ll be pleasantly surprised – nearly everything is cheaper in the UK than it is here at home. Groceries, clothes, gigs & events, cars, international travel, eating out (and drinking out too!) are more affordable than Australia! In fact one of the only things that is more expensive is red meat (which makes sense as they have far less room for agriculture than we do.) Check out http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/economist-intelligence-units-top-10-list-of-most-expensive-cities-saw-london-drop-behind-sydney/story-fni0cx12-1226664649189 and http://www.smh.com.au/money/yes-australia-is-expensive--but-its-not-all-bad-news-20140614-zs3so.html  for a reflection on the most recent report from ‘The Economist’ about the cost of living between London & Sydney.

If the cost of living in London is one of the reasons why you don’t want to make the move then I’m glad we can blow that roadblock out of the way for you!
