Seeing the Positives: Dyspraxia and Dyslexia

Our CPD Product Manager Trisha responds to an article in the January edition of the SEN Magazine

In the January 2015 edition of SEN Magazine, I came across an article entitled, “Seeing the Positives” by Rosie Edmonson. In her article Rosie discusses her experience of living with Dyspraxia and Dyslexia. Read the original article here 

The article highlights the challenges that she faced in both her academic and social life which really made me reflect upon my experience as a primary teacher and the challenges Protocol Education teachers and support staff may be facing when trying to understand SpLD and what that means and looks like for their students.

I personally feel that I had a real lack of knowledge in terms of SEND as a whole when I started teaching and the task of identifying and supporting a student who may have had or did have a specific learning difficulty would have been pretty daunting. Coming out of Teachers College (PGCE) I had taken a course in SEND but had no real specialist experience or knowledge. I don’t think we had even discussed what to look for and/or when/how to make a referral if you had concerns about one of your students let alone how to support them. I can imagine that many others out there probably feel the same way.  

In her article Rosie talks about her own school experience and how she felt different from her classmates. I wonder if the proper support had been in place and she had been given strategies and tools to help with the challenges she faced, her experience at school would have been different.

I think we have a long way to go in terms of our understanding and the accessibility of training available for teachers and support staff but in the meantime I have put together a list of possible resources for you to check out.
