During the unusually cold month of March, I had the privilege of spending a week away with about 90 Year 6 students in Wales. During the trip we provided daily updates to the website, as we explored team building exercises including ‘Humans vs. Raptors’ and the ‘Blind Trail’.

The Blind Trail was my personal favorite and I was declared ‘the first teacher ever to voluntarily get muddy’. Students led their partners through an obstacle course that sucked the boots off your feet and enticed you to crawl through pits of muddy tunnels on your stomach! The excercise very unique and it encouraged students to trust in one another and practice using words and vocabulary to assist someone who was visually impaired.

Another activity students braved was the rock wall and abseiling. I saw one of the tougher boys put himself in the harness at the top of a 7 meter wall , fight back his tears to prove to himself that he was capable of conquering his fear of heights. I had never seen his so vunerable and it was inspiring!

Through these valuable lessons, this Year 6 group were enhancing their personal beliefs and core strengths as they pushed their comfort zones and broke barriers without the assistance and support of their parents.

Each day, students were up with excitement and piled the food onto their plates, realizing the surplus energy that was required to hike up a hill for 5km and kayak in the cold wet weather Wales is infamous for. Overall, the students grew as individuals and learned about what they were capable of accomplishing through resilience and determination. A good combination of traits to be conscious of as they get through their SAT's and head into Year 7!
