For the Love of Science

Ivan is a Canadian trained Secondary teacher who is currently in a permanent postion through Protocol Education in a school in Milton Keynes.

I have known most of my life that I wanted to pursue teaching. My interest and curiosity has been what pushed me into teaching science.

I did an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry which gave me the chance to work in the lab and explore what science really had to offer. I knew that if science was that interesting to me as a young adult, I had to be the one to make science exciting for my students.

What I love about science is that no other subject promotes exploration, creativity, imagination, and inquisition quite like it.

What I love about science is that no other subject promotes exploration, creativity, imagination, and inquisition quite like it. It gives students the chance to discover the world around them in a hands-on, stimulating way. I can see this in my students now. Even the most difficult students, when given a microscope, give the task their full attention. This really inspires me to keep teaching and show students that learning can be interesting and a lifelong process.

I also enjoy the fact that there is so much room for technology in the classroom. In the science lab, we have so much equipment that can be used for better understanding and discovery. No two days are the same. Students get a new understanding of the tools that are necessary in the field and it often sparks interest in a future in the sciences.

In science, students also get the opportunity to discuss current event and see how science is affected. They also are able to discuss their own impact on the local environment and come up with ways to keep a clean and healthy place for their families to live.

Lastly, I love science because….it’s just plain awesome! (Not that I am biased or anything). In all honesty, it is difficult to find someone who says science is boring, or that they do not like it. Since it can be so interactive and is changing as the world does, it is a place for students to escape the regular classroom and try something new.
