How To Open A UK Bank Account

Mitch Jones is one of Protocol Education’s Australian based consultants. In his latest blog, he shows Aussie teachers the best – and easiest – way to set up a UK bank account to use during your British teaching experience.

If I had a dollar for every time I received an email from a teacher asking “How do I organise a bank account in England?” I’d be as rich as Donald Trump (and, sadly, with a hairline fast on its way to a similar fate.) Being registered with Protocol makes the whole process incredibly simple and straightforward.

Before you leave Australia your local consultant (Sam, Dennis or myself) will organise your initial induction meeting for when you arrive in England. Amongst other things we give you the relevant paperwork to open a bank account with HSBC. This is done free of charge and is just one of the services we offer to teachers with us.

When you visit the bank you don’t have to produce months of Australian bank statements, pay slips or reams of ID documents; because you have a letter of reference from us (which we give you at your induction meeting) you can open an account with HSBC on the spot. Bank cards (and credit cards if you requested them) normally take 5 days to get posted out, however aside from that you can start transferring your Aussie dollars into your brand new UK bank account within days!

Even better is that if you have your initial meeting in our Central London or Wimbledon offices, both branches of HSBC are quite literally across the road from our offices. You finish your induction meeting with us, take your paperwork across the road to HSBC and open your account. Simple as that!

Finally make sure you register with our mates at Tranzfers for your international transfers from your Aussie bank to your new UK one. They transfer money faster, easier and cheaper than any bank. If you aren’t using them you may as well throw a bagful of pounds in the bin when you land at Heathrow because they will save you money – simple as that! Protocol’s Aussie staff even use them when we go back to the UK each September for our annual company conference – that’s how good they are!

Got any questions about banks, money transfers or simply teaching in the UK? Submit a quick & easy online enquiry now and the Aussie team will get back to you!
