Switching from Long-Term to Daily Supply Teaching

Follow Amy as she documents her experiences supply teaching in South London Primary Schools and Nurseries through Protocol Education. Amy has recently completed a long term assignment at one of our client schools and is moving on to daily supply teaching. Here she documents her feelings of excitement and apprehension as she takes on a different kind of challenge.

Long term supply  

I have been on a long-term supply position since September and there were several activities which were part of my remit.

Firstly, I was there to raise the profile of French within the school. From the beginning I busied myself by creating a whole school display on French, individual class displays, introduced Mandarin into the school as an alternative language for the Year 4's and even tried to apply for grants from the British Council for various ways to raise the profile of languages within the school.

I have also been teaching problem solving to KS2 as well as Phonics in Year 1 and helping with Gifted and Talented writing.
 
Change of Direction

Although the role has been very varied up until now, I have decided that because I want to focus more on my language teaching I need to be in a role which allows me to focus on that for the time being. In the meantime, I am going to be doing more supply placements. I suppose this will mean I will feel more like a typical supply teacher compared to my current role where I am, in many respects, a 'normal' member of staff.

Anxieties

I am now experiencing a whole range of emotions about working in many different schools. I am excited about getting to see so many examples of good (and bad) practise! I think this will be fantastic for my professional development - seeing how different teachers and schools operate. I am however also very nervous about it.

Amongst my concerns are behaviour, negotiating travel routes to each school, little planning left and fewer resources than I am used to. Almost everybody seems to have done supply at some stage in their career and talking to people can either allay fears or confirm them! Among the rumours are that in your first few weeks you will be working at the 'worst' schools. I am still unclear what 'worst' means? Worst behaviour? Worst management? Worst area? I guess I may be about to find out.
 
Keen to press on

I think with anything where there is a sense of trepidation and excitement but I am keen to press on with my journey of supply teaching. As ridiculous as it sounds I am almost frustrated that half term is coming up!
