Breeze your way through Parent Teacher Evening

Parents/Guardians evening can often be seen as one of the more complicated parts of being a teacher and many teachers feel the pressure and it can be an overwhelming experience. We have devised four ways for you to sail through your parent’s evening.


Talk Positive

  • It’s always good to start with a positive. If you aren’t sure where to start use the child’s target as a guide.
  • From here you can ease in the areas that need improvement. And always provide factual information, for example ‘your child is working at 2b in their writing’.
  • Recap where their child is now and where they need to go next. Add in how you will be supporting them in reaching their next target as well as how the parents can support them.


Be Organised

  • Be prepared in order to not getting flustered on the night. This will then help your evening run smoothly and make you feel like everything is in control.
  • Know what pieces of work you want to show (you can even have post it notes on specific pages!) and have your trackers with levels to hand. If you have access to support in your class you can also get them to help you out.
  • If you haven’t had the class long or you are a secondary teacher and have many classes, it might be an idea to have a photo of each child with names to glance quickly before parent’s come in.
  • Make sure you provide chairs for your parents waiting outside.


Stick the Time Limit

  • There is a reason for the time limit so make sure you stick to it. No one likes to be kept waiting and be aware than people can become agitated when waiting too long.
  • Have a clock in sight so you can easily glance to see if you are on track.
  • If a parent wishes to discuss something further organise an additional meeting.


Stay Hydrated

  • Sounds like common sense doesn’t it? However, remembering to drink is something we often forget to do!
  • You will be doing a lot of talking so make sure you can a bottle of water or two close by.
  • If coffee or tea are being offered say yes! It’s no secret that the caffeine will keep you alert through the evening. Don’t drink too much though... you do have to sleep that night!
  • As well as liquid refreshments make sure you have a few snacks on hand. Many schools offer an evening spread before parents evening begin. Just like your children you can’t expect to perform without any fuel in the tank.
  • If your school isn’t offering snacks suggest it. It’s going to be a long evening.
