The Maths Passport

Heather is a Primary Teacher from Canada who is currently working in London through Protocol Education

I recently discovered a really creative way of inspiring my maths group. This is by means of a “Maths Passport”.  I have taught in many schools and this technique to motivate the students’ mathematical development has definitely caught my interest.

Each student is given a passport-like booklet which they use twice a week. Each continent is graded by level so as the students’ progress they are “travelling the world”. The creativity continues, as ‘customs’ sheets are distributed and stored in their passport. The children complete the tasks associated with each continent before being signed off and moving up a level (to the next continent).

Like travellers, students collect signatures like stamps and are able to see their own progress. Students need to answer mathematical questions twice a week and if they don’t get them all right they need to wait for the next time to try again for a signature. They have to get a perfect score within a minute- clearly proving that they are capable of understanding the necessary math to complete the tasks of each separate continent.

Each continent has a list of tasks to be completed so the student feels a sense of intrinsic motivation in knowing they’ve gotten all the way to South America.

As an individual who struggled with maths growing up and throughout my education, I have sought to create interest and excitement in a subject that many students find differcult.
