Interview with Top Long Term Teacher 2013 - Nicola Nel

It's National Supply Teacher Week! The extremely hard-working Nicola Nel was nominated by our South Primary team as their Long Term Supply Teacher of the Year. She has won a free massage/reflexology treatment and an evening of pampering on us. Take it away Nicola ...

What do you love about doing Supply Work?

I love the freedom that supply work offers. You choose how much work per week suits you, and Protocol Education makes it happen! I have been very fortunate to have only been without work for 2 days in the last 6 month period! As an NQT, I have also made great contacts in key schools in my area and learnt a great deal of fabulous tips from loads of different teachers, in a variety of year groups - sometimes moving from reception to Year 6 the in same day!

What do you like about the particular Long-term role you have at the moment?

I love my regular days, as I know know the staff well and have built a great working relationship with them! I have also developed a rapport with the classes I teach and really look forward to my long term days. I have been given some long term plans, and been extended the freedom to make lessons my own, as I can add or change things to the existing plans.

What advice would you give other teachers and support workers who are looking  for a long term role?

Definitely do a trial day before you agree to anything long term. Its important to know that the school's ethos, location and teaching suits your style.

How do you hear about Protocol Education and what do you like about us?

Protocol Education was recommended to me by my sister, who worked through them for many years before emigrating. They also came to a recruitment fair while I was doing my PGCE at Kingston University, and the consultants seemed to be the best at the fair (The free mug may have swung me!).

Anyone you would like to thank...?

I would like to thank the fantastic team of consultants at Protocol Education for always being so friendly on the early 7am phone calls, and for going the extra mile to find work at lovely schools. It makes my job a pleasure!
