Post-it Notes

We all can use some useful tips in the classroom and has teachers we love little things that help make our job a little easier. Sophie suggests using post-it-notes. 

Now I know post-it-notes are such a simple resource in a classroom but they are actually really effective resources. I have been using them a lot in my lessons and the children love to have a place to jot all their ideas down.  When you are explaining a new idea to the children it is obviously quite hard to take it all in. This way the children can note key language or facts to help them and give them a little tip whilst they are dealing with the task. It is a great method to keep the children on track and listening on the carpet.  For children that learn by doing or writing down it gives them a different way of accessing the lesson which has often proved very beneficial. When children watch a clip for example it is a struggle for an adult to absorb all the information so how do you expect the children to do the same.

Another great thing to do with post-it-notes is to allow children to write their question down on them and either put them on a poster or a display wall. This helps children as you can come back when you have time to their questions and they can continue their learning.  They can note down vocabulary and keep them on their desks which will give them inspiration in their learning. If the children are absorbing more from your lesson there will also be a higher success rate. This will build self-efficacy as the children will feel very able to cope with the task. They are great for games or little notes and make their learning fun as they are something else to bring to the learning. The notes do not have to be neat this way and the children do not have to worry about this work it will simply be reminders to keep them on track. So however little effect you think this resource may have, try this in your lessons and see if this technique works for your children.

I also find when marking the children’s work it is not very nice for children’s self-esteem if you make notes everywhere which are negative comments. A post-it-note is something you can make a note on and they can then focus on this note and make their work better. They can then simply remove the post-it-note and simple their work is now correct. It is much better than that negative comment staying in their book for them to read every time they look in it. It builds a positive relationship with you and the children, and they are happy about their learning.
