Using the Resources Around You

Whether you’re a teacher or supply a great piece of advice I have been given is use the resources you already have.

One meaning of this is using the great websites and clips already out there to help catch children’s attention. There are lots of great websites which give you basic lesson plans which you can adapt and change them to create lessons linked to your children.

TES for example is a great one to use to get basic lesson formats. Rising Stars is a new upcoming website that lots of schools are starting to use for Mathematics with the new curriculum and the higher objectives.

With the website Primary Resources I have also found a lot of great PowerPoints to use especially when introducing a new topic which are great to re-use, you can adapt them to your own class but it also saves you lots of time. Saving time is really important in teaching as it allows you to dedicate your time to more important jobs that the children will truly benefit from.  Pinterest also shows great ideas that teachers have tried out in their classes which is good to see how the idea worked and whether it was successful. A great way to use resources is sharing good practice and working together.

A lesson can also stem from a book in your class you have or simply a few pictures. Some of the greatest lessons I have taught were from a couple of pictures and you can let the children perceive them in any way they want. It is a great way of giving them control yet you are letting their uniqueness and experimental skills flare.

Another way to use the resources around is by using the outdoors. It is a great way to introduce settings in a story and giving the children the chance to use their senses. In my experience this opportunity for them to have a hands on approach gains much better results especially in their writing.

Musical instruments can lead to many investigations and questions. Hearing the sound may remind children of something which they can record in their story or they may be curious in a science investigation about the sound and how it was made. It stems in so many directions and it all came from things in your classroom. Nowadays people are so focused on their objectives that they forget to strip down the lesson to what children would actually find interesting.

Often this is not fancy or full of resources it just has to be the right resource to inspire them; making it simple in your mind makes it more accessible and you get stronger results from the children in order to help them on their learning journey.
